Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic condition affecting the colon and digestive system. Researchers have several different thoughts on what may cause the syndrome, however nothing is for certain. Commonly, individuals with IBS may have abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhea. Seeing your pelvic floor physical therapist can help manage the symptoms, to make the condition more tolerable and manageable.
Your pelvic physical therapist will prescribe certain exercises or perform manual therapy techniques depending on what is appropriate for your presentation. The term “syndrome” means to have a group of symptoms that are commonly related to each other, however your therapist will individualize your program to fit what works best for you, in effort to reduce the effect the IBS has on everyday life. My daughter developed a stress fracture due to over-training and lack of proper guidance. She had to sit out her sophomore season and we were afraid her running career would be over. Her self-confidence was way down and we had serious concerns, but thanks to BreakThrough she is “back on track” and continuously improving her times as well as enjoyment for cross country. Thank you!
