During the early stages of breast feeding, it is not uncommon for mothers to experience blocked milk ducts. Duct blockage can occur due to the breast not being completely emptied during feeding or pumping sessions. When the breast becomes overly engorged, the surrounding soft tissue can begin to collapse in on the duct causing blockage. Mothers with milk duct blockage often experience tenderness throughout the breast, a palpable and tender lump at the site of the blocked duct, and even a low fever. Often, symptoms disappear within 48 hours. However, if the blockage does not resolve on its own, physical therapy can help.
At BreakThrough, mothers with clogged milk ducts are treated in a private treatment room. Treatment consists of a moist hot pack, ultrasound therapy, and manual therapy techniques specific for unclogging the duct. Patients should be prepared either to pump or breastfeed immediately after treatment and are welcome to bring their new baby to breastfeed or to pump before leaving BreakThrough. Patients often experience relief in just one or two treatment sessions. Please call (408) 736-7600 to schedule an appointment with our pelvic floor and milk duct specialist. We look forward to helping you find the relief you deserve from milk duct blockage.

My daughter developed a stress fracture due to over-training and lack of proper guidance. She had to sit out her sophomore season and we were afraid her running career would be over. Her self-confidence was way down and we had serious concerns, but thanks to BreakThrough she is “back on track” and continuously improving her times as well as enjoyment for cross country. Thank you!
